Lizzie Mae Powell of Kinston went home to be with the Lord at Sodalis Senior Living in DeFuniak Springs, Florida on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. She was 95. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Philip Barnes, officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Mrs. Powell was born in Covington County, Alabama on March 16, 1931, to the late Jonah and Mary Avant Pridgen. She was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Samson High School, Class of 1949. She later received a degree from business school. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Powell, Jr.; son, Brian Powell; two brothers, Olan Pridgen and Sam Pridgen; and two sisters, Clavis and Julia.
She is survived by two sons, Hershel Powell, III (Robin) of Dothan, and Craig Powell of Samson; four grandchildren, Sara Dowling (Alex) of Samson, Jared Powell of Atlanta, GA, Jeffrey Powell, USMC Beauford, SC, and Brandon Powell of Dothan; three great-grandchildren, Miles and Porter Dowling, both of Samson, and Ellavee Powell of Georgia; and a brother, John Quincy Pridgen of Enterprise.
